DAY 16 Explore Alicante & Costa Blanca (Spain)

A plethora of glorious destinations to choose from today – Costa Blanca’s sparkling Mediterranean coastline and historic towns, energetic Alicante with its stunning beaches and spectacular Castillo de Santa Bárbara, the vibrant holiday mecca of Benidorm, the idyllic mountain town of Guadalest or the palm forests of Elche.

You could make your way along the renowned Costa Blanca (meaning white coast) to discover a glorious stretch of beach-studded Mediterranean coastline. A premier international holiday hot-spot, its gorgeous white sand beaches and postcard perfect secluded bays enchanting visitors all summer long. From the historic towns of Jávea and Xátiva to its sparkling coves, palm fringed promenades and quaint fishing and resort villages which are guaranteed to charm. Perhaps journey inland to Elche (Elx) - famed for its exotic palm forest originally planted by the Moors or discover Guadalest (El Castell de Guadalest) - the sixteenth-century Moorish castle town and former Muslim settlement built high up in the surrounding rock – enter by foot through a gateway tunnelled into the mountain.

Alicante is quintessentially Spanish - bathed in soft sunshine and an air of Mediterranean elegance – its breathtakingly beautiful stretches of beach line the coast, enriched by the towering medieval Castillo de Santa Bárbara. Maybe explore the rambling Castillo de Santa Bárbara, an imposing medieval fortress located on the bare rocky hill above the city accessible by an elevator built deep into the mountainside and marvel at the Iberian and Roman remains that have been found at this site. Perhaps ignite your inner history buff with a visit to one of the well-curated museums featuring everything from ancient archaeology to contemporary art, indulge in the city’s cuisine scene or relax on one of the city’s long, sandy beaches which are sun kissed for much of the year.
