DAYS 1–2 Indian Pacific Sydney to Adelaide

Fly into Sydney and be personally met at the airport by a DISCOVER AUSTRALIA representative and transferred from the airport to the Indian Pacific railway station to begin your journey to Adelaide.

Embark on the legendary Indian Pacific as you travel from the harbour city of Sydney to the 'City of Churches' Adelaide, marvel at the beauty passing by your cabin window, the magnificent Blue Mountains, rural countryside, tough mallee scrub home to the outback town of Broken Hill and onto the fertile green surrounds of beautiful Adelaide.

See below for full details on your Indian Pacific journey. Note: passengers embarking in Perth enjoy 1 extra night on the Indian Pacific.

As you arrive into Adelaide you can feel the history and culture of 'The City of Churches'. You will be personally met by a DISCOVER AUSTRALIA representative and transferred from the Indian Pacific railway station on arrival in Adelaide to your Adelaide hotel. You can relax and use the rest of the day to explore your hotel and its facilities, perhaps take a stroll around the neighbourhood and central Adelaide.

DAY 3 Murray River Cruise

Unwind on a lazy Murray River cruise, this ancient river will enchant you, the ever changing scenery a delight as you immerse yourself in one of the world's most diverse river systems, hear tales of history and folklore as your crew provide expert onboard commentary, as you pass giant red gum trees and sheer ochre cliffs spot for pink cockatoo, red-capped robin, malleefowl and pelican.

Depart Mannum, cruise under floodlight to Mundurra while looking out for nocturnal wildlife.

DAY 4 Murray River Cruise

Murray Bridge lies 80km east of Adelaide, the fantastic climate lends itself to an outdoor lifestyle, water sports, fishing, boating, swimming, walking and hiking are all very popular activities, the city is situated in scenic surrounds dotted with picturesque farms, Murray Bridge attractions include, Sturt Reserve, Captain's Cottage Museum and a golf course.

Cruise to Murray Bridge, enjoy a guided tour of the town’s landmarks, stop at Mannum and moor for the night at Salt Bush Flat.

DAY 5 Murray River Cruise

The Murray Riverlands are home to a wonderful and diverse variety of native plants and animals, gnarled red river gums dot the waters edge, mallee trees and native pines abound, the mighty river teems with fish including Murray cod and Australian smelt, small animals such as frogs, snakes and possums make the scenic riverbanks their home.

Today experience a guided nature walk before taking in the big river gorges and cliffs of the upper river. Enjoy a presentation on the food and wine of the region before joining a wildlife tour on your small discovery vessel. Enjoy bocce or fishing challenges before joining the Captain and Officers for pre-dinner drinks and the Captain’s Dinner and Dance.

Today see Victoria Square (heart of Adelaide city), Gouger Street (restaurant cafe strip), King William Street's famous boulevard, The Terraces (4 terraces that separate the city from its greenbelts) and Adelaide's magnificent parks, gardens and greenbelts. See River Torrens with its delightful garden banks, Parliament House, State Library, Trinity Church (Adelaide's oldest church), fashionable Hutt Street and stop at Haigh's Chocolates to enjoy complimentary tea or coffee accompanied by fine Haigh's chocolates (Haigh's unavailable on Sundays). See Beehive Corner at Rundle Mall, Adelaide Oval (one of Australia's most notable cricket grounds and houses the Bradman collection), the quaint suburbs of North Adelaide; O'Connell Street (restaurants and trendy shops), St Peter's Cathedral, Colonel Light's Lookout on Montefiore Hill (spectacular views over Adelaide).

Following your tour of Adelaide, embark on a leisurely scenic cruise along the Torrens River on board the famous Adelaide icon, “The Popeye”. Take in the picturesque scenery and prolific birdlife as you cruise through the heart of this wonderful city. Finish your cruise at Elder Park and spend some time taking in this beautiful oasis in the heart of Adelaide.

Enjoy some free time this afternoon to explore Adelaide and some of it’s treasures.

DAY 8 Victor Harbor with McLaren Vale

The Fleurieu Peninsula is a holiday playground of wineries, seaside towns and lakes whose population trebles during holiday periods. The splendid seaside resort township of Victor Harbor is where the mouth of the massive Murray River finally meets the ocean. The internationally respected wine region of McLaren Vale has more than 60 cellar doors and produces amazing Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines. The old paddle-steamer port of Goolwa is on Lake Alexandrina, near the Murray Mouth, and is joined by a bridge to Hindmarsh Island.

Tour through the Mt Lofty Ranges with its many quaint villages and panoramic views. Stop at historic Strathalbyn on the Angas River. See the river Port of Goolwa (where the Murray River meets the lakes and sea), Port Elliot, Horseshoe Bay, Encounter Bay and Victor Harbor. Perhaps ride a horse drawn tram across the causeway to Granite Island. Enjoy some free time to explore Victor Harbor. Then onto McLaren Vale wine region to see the vineyards, leafy olive groves, almond groves and magnificent old stone wineries. Perhaps taste top local wines at Hardys Tintara Cellar Door, sample produce at Medlows Confectionary and sample produce at Almond Train. Take in the views of the picturesque coastal seaside towns, before heading north back to Adelaide to conclude your full day of exploring the Fleurieu Peninsula.

DAY 9 Grand Barossa with Hanhdorf

Head to the Adelaide Hills to explore one of Australian best and most famous wine-producing regions, now regarded as one of finest in the world, and is home to Australia's most expensive wine, Penfolds Grange. Enjoy your delicious Special Lunch at a renowned winery restaurant, including tastings, winemaking tour and wine education. Explore some of the quaint and charming villages in the Adelaide Hills, part of the Mount Lofty Ranges. See the heavy influence of the original German settlers, such as buildings with steeply sloping roofs, Lutheran stone churches and the local versions of Germanic cuisine. Visit Hahndorf, the beautiful Lutheran settlement dating back to 1838, with its arts, crafts, cottage industry shops, pubs, traditional small goods and bakeries that evoke the tastes and smells of Bavaria.

Leaving Adelaide, enjoy a scenic tour alongside the Torrens River through the spectacular Torrens Gorge, see Kangaroo Creek Reservoir, Millbrooke Reservoir, Williamstown (beautiful stone buildings) and learn the secrets of Barossa Reservoir's 'Whispering Wall'. Stop at Lyndoch Bakery for complimentary coffee or tea and a German sampler plate of sweet treats. Discover the art of great winemaking on your 'Behind the Scenes' guided tour of Richmond Grove Wines, housed in a charming historic chateau.
