DAY 5 Rome to Orvieto to Venice

Today we set off through the enchanting Italian countryside to the region of Umbria, known as the 'fruit bowl of Italy', to medieval Orvieto with its dramatic setting. We take the funicular mountain railway up to the historic centre with some free time to explore. Atop a volcanic rock plateau amidst the verdant Umbrian countryside, the small clifftop city of Orvieto features a classic medieval centre of winding laneways, brownstone houses and cobbled piazzas. Beneath the rock, an underground network of caves attests to the city’s Etruscan roots, while in the old town, visitors flock to the breathtaking 13th century Duomo di Orvieto; one of Italy's greatest Gothic churches adorned with exquisite frescoes.

Next is Venice, a city built on more than 100 small islands that are lined with splendid Renaissance and Gothic palaces. It has no roads, just canals like the famous Grand Canal. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s famous red roofs.

DAY 7 Venice to Lake Garda to Florence to Tuscany

Journey inland to the largest and most spectacular of the Italian lakes. Be captivated by the crystal clear waters and enchanting views of northern Italy’s famed Lake Garda; a shimmering expanse decorated with historic waterside villages, Roman ruins and striking medieval castles. The magnificent Lake Garda is bordered by three distinct regions, from towering mountain scenery in the north down to the charming farmhouses and rolling vineyards of the south, with harbours and colourful fishing boats nestled in between.

Travel to spectacular Tuscany, famous for its stunning landscapes, world-class art, fine food and wine. Italy's most beautiful region is guaranteed to delight you, especially so Florence. DAY 8 Tuscany to Cinque Terre to Pisa to Tuscany

Today we head to the colourful southern end of the Italian Riviera, to La Spezia featuring incredible Cinque Terre. Amidst the spectacular coastal scenery and charming postcard villages of the Italian Riviera, the striking port city of La Spezia offers an authentic look into one of the region’s lesser known tourist destinations. Exuding the unique charm of a working port city; palm-lined promenades and fertile citrus parks give way to the winding streets, cosy trattorias and colourful balconies of the old town.

At Cinque Terre colourful houses and vineyards cling to steep terraces along some of the most dramatic coastal scenery on the planet. Made up of five ingeniously constructed fishing villages, harbours are filled with fishing boats and trattorias turn out seafood specialties along with the Liguria region’s famous sauce, pesto. These five picturesque coastal cliff-side villages have no vehicles and are linked by rail and footpath. Enjoy wonderful free-time exploring the towns by train or by foot, perhaps try some of the best seafood in Italy.

This afternoon, see the famous 800 year old Leaning Tower of Pisa, with some more free time.

DAY 9 Tuscany to San Gimignano to Siena to Rome

Journey through the Tuscan countryside made famous by numerous great painters, to the walled town of San Gimignano whose 14 towers reach for the sky (this was duplicate “rise up” which is repeated in next sentance) like a medieval Manhattan. Encircled by 13th-century walls, the striking hilltop town of San Gimignano rises up amidst the gorgeous Tuscan countryside; its famed towers - built in aristocratic rivalry by feuding nobles – surge up above the charming old town. The village’s fresco adorned cathedral, beautifully preserved architecture, enticing rural surrounds and ancient skyscrapers create an unmistakably Tuscan encounter.

We continue to the medieval masterpiece of Siena. Here we'll enjoy a special wine tasting accompanied with antipasto. One of Italy’s best-preserved medieval cities, Siena is home to a remarkable ensemble of red brick gothic architecture and early Renaissance art. The magnificent 14th century Torre del Mangia tower soars above the town; its sun drenched central square extending out into the city’s historic districts, where vibrant narrow streetscapes and steep alleys are brimming with enticing restaurants, wafting Pasticceria (spelling) aromas and unmistakable Tuscan charm.

It’s easy to see why visitors fall in love with this enchanting beach city filled with remarkable architecture and a boundless cultural scene. Recognised as one of the most attractive cities in Europe, the Catalan capital has a cosmopolitan international vibe. There is so much to do and see - museums, the 'Old Town', art galleries, sun-drenched beaches, incredible cafes and some of the best shopping in Europe. The renewed Park Guell features the spectacular quirky design typical of Anton Gaudi all with panoramic city views.

Barcelona's architectural treasures span 2000-plus years, but many of its more modern additions are it’s most famous. The Modernisme movement and Antoni Gaudí’s has greatly influenced the face of Barcelona architecture. Barcelona’s bright light and mood has also long inspired artists, including Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró (with major museums here devoted to their works).

You’ll savour mealtime. The Catalan region has a long and celebrated tradition of cooking with simple, flavourful ingredients like seafood and jamón (cured ham) which are transformed into remarkable delicacies often served in spectacular settings.
