DAY 5 Dutch Countryside

This morning we meet up with the tour director of your fully escorted Leisurely Europe adventure and get to know your fellow travellers also joining us for our exciting tour.

We then embark on a fascinating tour of the iconic Dutch countryside with its vast green landscapes adorned with centuries-old windmills, vibrant springtime tulips, Dutch Renaissance palaces and romantic gabled houses. Experience the historical windmill village of Zaanse Schans and discover how they were vital to the industrial development of the Netherlands. See the historic polder drainage windmill built in 1636. Visit the quaint seaside village of Volendam with its colourful houses and wander the main street filled with cafes and local nick-nacks and admire the sprawling views. Famous for cheeses like Gouda, Edam, Maasdam and Boerenkaas, you’ll savour a visit to a Dutch cheesemaker. Learn all about the quirky clog and its cultural significance from a clog maker.

DAY 6 Amsterdam to Berlin (Germany)

We leave Holland behind and tour through Germany to its bold and vibrant capital Berlin. The German countryside is speckled with Baroque palaces, fairytale villages, mountaintop castles, centuries-old biergarten and half-timbered medieval towns. This is a country where historic monuments and wartime relics sit beside underground clubs and ultra-modern galleries, complemented by hearty German fare and famous frothy beer.

Bursting with history, and still carrying some scars from the cold war, Berlin has today developed a remarkable combination of cutting-edge glamour and grunge. Celebrate our arrival into Berlin with a scrumptious German dinner at a traditional beer hall.

DAY 7 Explore Berlin

This morning experience an enthralling tour of Berlin. Breathe in the culture of this big multicultural metropolis with positive energy bursting in every direction. We see a number of poignant locations like Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Site of Hitler’s Former Bunker, Luftwaffe HQ, 17th June Street, The Berlin Wall, The Former SS Headquarters, and Checkpoint Charlie. Learn the story of this city. Einstein, Marx, Hitler, JFK, Bismarck and Bowie are some of the famous people that have shaped – and been shaped by – Berlin.

We farewell Berlin heading for Dresden in Saxony. When admiring the elegant spires, towers, domes, palaces, churches and stately buildings of Dresden - it's hard to believe that the city was all but destroyed in World War II. It has had a remarkable painstaking restoration to fully restore its grand buildings. Enjoy some time here, perhaps some local German food - such as Bratwurst - and wander the beautiful paved streets.

We continue on through the old iron curtain to the Czech Republic and splendid fairy tale Prague. The Czech Republic is at the very heart of Europe, a fascinating confluence of worlds. Here, cutting edge cosmopolitan culture greets perpetually thriving folkloric tradition as remnants of Germanic West and Slavic East unite in inimitable style.

Prague is the equal of Paris in terms of beauty. Its history goes back a millennium and is renowned to have the best beer in Europe. It’s well recognised as a beautiful city, boasting elaborate baroque, gothic, art nouveau and cubist architecture. Known for its abundance of art, your exploration of Prague will be a truly rewarding one. Prague will come to life during your walking tour of the city with a passionate local guide. Prague's dramatic history is reflected in the beauty of the architecture of churches, opera houses, concert halls and parks. You could sample the famous local beer or visit the John Lennon tribute - Lennon wall - with its words of peace, which is added to on a daily basis. DAY 10 Prague to Bratislava (Slovakia) to Vienna (Austria)

Today we leave the Czech Republic and head to Slovakia, to experience its capital Bratislava. We take a tour of this medieval and Gothic city, including a visit to famous Bratislava Castle, high on the hill. Charm abounds in this intriguing city, set on the banks of the Danube River. The alluring pedestrian old town is a mosaic of winding cobbled streets adorned with medieval and gothic churches, baroque palaces and quirky cafes.

We continue to Austria and its capital Vienna. Austria is glorious alpine scenery and monumental Habsburg architecture; this is the land of Schubert and Mozart, where flower freckled meadows grace the hilltops and glacial lakes sparkle like gemstones in the summer sun.

Few cities can show off such cultural and historical splendour and maintain a profile as an exciting, modern city, but Vienna does it well. Baroque streetscapes and imperial palaces set the stage for Vienna's artistic and musical masterpieces. Vienna is renowned as the 'City of Music’ with a deep classical heritage, home to some of the greatest ever musicians like Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. Vienna has a buzzing modern culinary scene, rich coffee-house culture and bustling social scene.

DAY 11 Vienna to Munich (Germany)

Leaving Vienna this morning we journey through the heart of Austria - a tapestry of captivating landscapes and rich cultural heritage - charming villages and lush vineyards punctuated by historic castles and monasteries. Catch glimpses of quaint roadside cafes, bustling markets and medieval fortresses, each adding its own charm to the romance of the voyage. Crossing into Bavaria - the rugged grandeur of the Alps gives way to the gentle lure of Munich's rolling plains dotted with quaint Bavarian towns and vibrant fields.

Arriving in Munich we experience an intriguing escorted walking tour of the city. A city of stark contrasts between modern and traditional. Where tall beer tankards and Lederhosen shorts sit side by side with high-tech cars and edgy art. Munich has a wealth of cultural hot-spots, smart sophistication and a certain charm that you’ll find irresistible. See Karlsplatz and Marienplatz, New Town Hall, Church of our Lady, and (if you visit in winter) the traditional German Christmas markets.

DAY 12 Munich to Ljubljana (Slovenia)

Today we cross the border into breathtaking Slovenia. Our first stop is at dreamy Lake Bled. Cradled in the Julian Alps like a sapphire jewel, the emerald waters of this enchanting lake create a haven that captures the very essence of Slovenia’s romantic allure. In the centre of the lake is a tiny island dedicated to housing a magnificent church. Perched dramatically on the edge of Bled Island’s sheer cliff sits the towering Bled Castle, reflecting atop the pristine waters like a scene from a fairy tale. Surrounded by emerald forests and embraced by the snow-capped peaks, Lake Bled will take your breath away.

From here we continue towards Slovenia’s leafy, elegant capital of Ljubljana. Experience a special walking tour of this little gem of a city with a local guide. Despite its small size, you’ll be enchanted by its beauty which features a wealth of cultures, activities and sights. Ljubljana Castle overlooks the city and dates back to the 16th Century. Its old town traces the leafy banks and emerald green waters of the winding Ljubljanica River. The streets are adorned with the stunning architecture of Jože Plecnik, his beautiful lamp posts and bridges peppering the pedestrian old town where quaint café terraces line the riverbank.

DAY 13 Ljubljana to Venice (Italy)

This morning, we enjoy some free time at the Postojna Castle and Caves. Marvel at the spectacular medieval cave castle, perched in the middle of a sheet cliff. Perhaps take an optional excursion into the majestic Postojna Caves – one of Slovenia’s subterranean wonders. These alluring caves beckon adventurers into a mesmerising underworld of limestone formations and ancient chambers.

From here we cross the border into intoxicating Italy arriving in dreamy Venice this afternoon. A city built on more than 100 small islands that are lined with splendid Renaissance and Gothic palace, Venice has no roads, just canals like the famous Grand Canal. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s famous red roofs.

We experience a walking tour along the canals and ancient narrow laneways through the heart of Venice to find out why this is such a famous city. See the instantly recognisable Rialto Bridge, St Mark's Square, the Bridge of Sighs and the Doge's Palace.

Afterwards, enjoy free time to explore Venice. Perhaps sip an espresso, take a cruise along the canals on a gondola or relax and watch the world go by in one of the many piazzas.

Today enjoy a free day to experience Venetian life at your own pace, visiting places of most interest to you. Venice is a truly magical city, a fairy-tail patchwork of beautiful canals and laneways that are thoroughly joyful to explore to discover grand historic buildings, marble palaces and bustling piazzas. The main city is small and compact, so you can easily wander from end to end. Explore the canals, sit and relax in the vibrant small squares, browse the chic shops and high-end boutiques, go cafe-hopping, indulge in a gastronomic extravagance or spend time immersing yourself into the fascinating Venetian history, art and culture. With over 400 bridges and endless laneways, one of the best things to do is to just wander… and get lost in Venice.

Perhaps spend the day discovering somewhere in detail, like Gallerie dell’Accademia, Tintoretto's Heaven on Earth, Basilica di San Marco, Palazzo Ducale, Opera at Teatro La Fenice, La Biennale di Venezia, Punta della Dogana or Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta. Travel to the spectacular Tuscany region. From ever enchanting Florence to the olive groves and vineyards of Chianti, Tuscany is the essence of old Italy. Birthplace of Renaissance art and architecture and famous for its olive oil, wine and artisan pasta, its lyrical landscapes will leave you mesmerized. Golden wheat fields, silver olive groves and undulating vineyards adorn the hillsides and valleys, as medieval hilltop villages soar up from amidst the cypress trees.

We experience a guided walking tour of Tuscany famous capital of Florence. It’s the cradle of the Renaissance culture, it’s romantic, enchanting and completely irresistible. This morning enjoy free time to explore this favoured playground of celebrities and the well-heeled. Nice has been a magnet for famous visitors since the 1700s. Nothing compares to the simple joy of a balmy beach morning interspersed with a spot of people-watching astride the Promenade des Anglais' famous blue chairs.

This afternoon we journey along the Mediterranean coast and learn about intoxicating fragrances at a local perfumery enroute to the Principality of Monaco (the world’s second-smallest country after Vatican City). The spectacular home of the Formula One Grand Prix street race has been a magnet for high-rollers and hedonists since the early 20th century. DAY 21 French Riviera to Barcelona (Spain)

We continue along the French Riviera past Montpellier to the world heritage protected Arles in the Camargue region, with its colourful houses and the 90AD Roman Amphitheatre. Once a provincial capital of ancient Rome, Arles is well known as the inspiration for 200 of Van Gogh canvas paintings, many of which are very recognisable and displayed in the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh. Walk in the footsteps of ancient Romans amidst the narrow streets and shady squares of enchanting Arles. Nestled into a romantic bend along the Rhône River amidst the lyrical landscapes of Provence, sunbaked stone houses and magnificent Roman treasures line every charming alleyway.

We journey west along the Mediterranean coast into Spain’s Catalonia region. Spain is a masterpiece of towering mountain ranges, sophisticated cities, astonishing architecture and golden Mediterranean beaches. Home to Rioja wine, Catalan cava and acorn-fed jamón ibérico, Spain’s diversity and obsession with food and wine will stir your soul.

DAY 23 Barcelona to Pont du Gard (France) to Avignon

Say adiós to Barcelona today as we travel to France through remarkable countryside to the historic Pont du Gard – an impressive 2,000 year old aqueduct built by hand with ancient tools. It has multiple levels and spans 300 metres, it’s truly magnificent.

We journey through the splendid Provence region. Provence seems to sum up everything enviable about the French lifestyle: fantastic food, hilltop villages, legendary wines, bustling markets and a balmy climate. Provence is renowned for its stunning variety of landscapes from fields of lavender, ancient olive groves, clifftop roads, maquis-cloaked hills to snow-tipped mountains. The flavours of Provence are irresistible, where cuisine has truly become an all-consuming passion.

We arrive at Avignon - 'The City of Popes' on the beautiful Rhône River. It has a long history, stunning architecture and great religious significance as the home of the Pope; centre of the Roman Catholic world for 70 years during the early 1300s. We continue through the beautiful French countryside, taking a scenic drive across into Switzerland and to Geneva, renowned for its lakeside sophistication. Geneva is surrounded by the Alps and Jura mountains, with dramatic views of towering Mont Blanc and set on the splendid Lake Geneva (Lac Léman). Today we say goodbye to Switzerland and travel to Strasbourg. Radiating a seamless blend of French and German influences Strasbourg’s enchanting picture-perfect cityscape is both vibrant and uniquely Alsatian. The stunning Strasbourg Cathedral, with its intricate Gothic façade, stands as a testament to the city's dramatic history while the charming La Petite France district features timber-framed houses reflected in tranquil canals - evoking a sense of timeless romance. Strasbourg's allure extends to its cosmopolitan flair, with the European Parliament and a wealth of cultural institutions making it a captivating destination - where history, architecture and modernity converge.

After indulging in a traditional Rhine River lunch in Strasbourg, we travel through Germany to the Rhine Valley famous for its medieval castles perched high above the river and steep fields of wine-producing grapes. The Rhine Valley’s soaring clifftop fortresses and near vertical terraced vineyards have inspired fables, fairy tales, paintings and poetry for centuries. Float atop the mythical waters of the Rhine River as you meander your way amidst some of Germany’s most evocative landscapes; medieval castles and quaint half-timbered villages with their idyllic gothic church steeples materialising around every riverbend.

Relax on board a splendid Rhine riverboat as we cruise past the most concentrated stretch of castles in all of Europe, expansive vineyards, charming medieval towns and lofty cliffs. Learn the curious story of the castles, most built by a mafia of local robber barons, knights and princes.
