DAY 6 Madrid to Segovia to San Sebastion

Today we say ‘adiós’ to magnificent Madrid and take a short journey to world heritage protected Segovia; a historic sandstone hued city set amidst the rolling countryside of Castilla. Here we immerse ourselves amidst the old-world charm of this beautiful city. Witness Segovia’s breathtaking Roman aqueduct featuring over 160 arches and marvel at the magnificent fairy-tale Alcázar of Segovia first documented in 1122. Adorning Segovia’s historic Plaza Mayor, on the site where Isabella I was proclaimed Queen of Castile, we admire Segovia Cathedral; a spectacular gothic style Roman Catholic cathedral that took almost 200 years to build. Its austere three-nave interior is juxtaposed against the spectacularly ornate gothic architecture of its famed exterior, a striking symbol amidst Segovia’s already rich architectural cityscape. Beyond Segovia’s famed monuments and medieval walls, a cluster of ancient churches and charming restaurants adorn the laneways of this historic town.

This afternoon we tour through picturesque Spanish hills, past more ancient buildings to San Sebastian which wraps gracefully around the golden sands of the postcard-perfect Playa de la Concha. Once a favourite holiday escape for Spanish royalty, San Sebastián’s elegant art nouveau buildings, ornate bridges and manicured parks and plazas set the scene for a staggering array of festivals and cultural events. DAY 7 San Sebastian to Pamplona to Zaragoza

Today we feel the thrill of the robust city of Pamplona. Famed the world over for its festival of San Fermín or “Running of the Bulls”, Pamplona is steeped in bold history and tradition. Home to stunning cathedrals and 16th century archaeological treasures. Enjoy free time today to explore its remarkably compact cobblestone medieval town which centres around the Plaza del Castillo, ringed by fashionable cafés and atmospheric ancient laneways, dotted with beautiful stone buildings and magnificent gothic style churches.

We then bask in the beauty of the wine-growing regions of northern Spain and delight in a tasting of local Spanish wines. Classic Spanish grape varieties include Tempranillo, Garnacha, Albariño and Macabeo which are acclaimed the world over.

This afternoon we arrive into the delightful riverside city of Zaragoza. Enjoy a walking tour this evening to discover sublime examples of Romanesque, Gothic-Mudejar, Renaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture. From the multi-domed Basílica del Pilar to the 11th-century Moorish palace of Aljafería, this ancient capital of the kingdom of Aragon also showcases an impressive collection of epoch-defining art by locally born Francisco de Goya. See the Baroque facade of the town hall in Plaza Consistorial, the Gothic church of San Saturnino and Cámara de Comptos (the oldest building in the city, dating back to the 13th century).

DAY 8 Zaragoza to Andorra to Barcelona

Today we are setting our sights for the excitement of Barcelona via the snow dusted ski slopes of the towering Andorran Pyrenees mountains. Marvel at the enchanting alpine wilderness that separates the Iberian Peninsula from the rest of Europe. Discover glorious Andorra la Vella, nestled in a verdant valley 1023 metres above sea level, it is Europe’s loftiest capital city. Renowned for its duty-free shopping and mountain panoramas, it is home to a tiny cobbled-stone historic town where the 12th-century Sant Esteve church and 16th-century Casa de la Vall sit peacefully against a backdrop of mountain greenery. Experience free time to explore the wonders of this breath-takingly beautiful and friendly mountain city.

We continue on our Spanish journey meandering through a rolling patchwork of glorious landscapes where we inhale the awe-inspiring beauty of the Pyrenees, where cattle graze in the crisp mountain air, fairy-tale villages sit nestled in green valleys and snow-capped peaks overlook pristine glacial lakes and streams.

We are then on our way to today’s final destination - Barcelona of Catalonia - sure to make a lasting impression. The Catalonia region is breathtaking - from the golden sands, lively beach resorts and medieval architecture of the Costa Brava to the verdant peaks, Roman archaeological treasures and sun-drenched meadows of the Pyrenees, Catalonia is a region of abundance and beauty - with a language all its own and a proud culture and cuisine to match.

We arrive in Barcelona to experience a thrilling tour of this enchanting beach city with remarkable architecture and a boundless cultural scene. See Sagrada Familia Cathedral and Gaudi's eclectic architecture. Experience La Ramblas - a walkway full of stalls, cafes, entertainers and life.

DAY 9 Explore Barcelona

Choose how you’d like to experience Barcelona today. It’s easy to see why visitors fall in love with this enchanting beach city filled with remarkable architecture and a boundless cultural scene. Recognised as one of the most attractive cities in Europe, the Catalan capital has a cosmopolitan international vibe. There is so much to do and see - museums, the 'Old Town', art galleries, sun-drenched beaches, incredible cafes and some of the best shopping in Europe. The renewed Park Guell features the spectacular quirky design typical of Anton Gaudi all with panoramic city views.

Barcelona's architectural treasures span 2000-plus years, but many of its more modern additions are its most famous. The Modernisme movement and Antoni Gaudí’s has greatly influenced the face of Barcelona architecture. Barcelona’s bright light and mood has also long inspired artists, including Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró (with major museums here devoted to their works).

You’ll savour mealtime. The Catalan region has a long and celebrated tradition of cooking with simple, flavourful ingredients like seafood and jamón (cured ham) which are transformed into remarkable delicacies often served in spectacular settings. DAY 10 Barcelona to Peniscola to Valencia

Leaving Barcelona with your heart and mind full of amazing experiences and memories, we travel along the south Mediterranean coast of Spain to Peniscola - a picture perfect coastal township celebrated for its stunning beaches and historic town which protrudes out amidst the sapphire waters of the Med. Encircled by ancient stone walls, the cobbled stone streets and whitewashed houses of the historic town are overseen by the 13th-century Peñíscola Castle. This Romanesque work was built by the Knights Templar on the remains of an old Arab fortress and was home of the Avignon pope Benedict XIII from 1415 to 1423. We allow it to share its myriad of secrets with us and magnificent panoramic views over the coast as we enjoy lunch.

We continue our journey this afternoon to a city of captivating contrasts and birthplace of the original Paella Valenciana. Valencia is part ‘old town’, part 21st century metropolis; always innovating yet fiercely proud of its history and traditions. The inner city is made up of an eclectic collection of Modernist, Gothic and Romanesque architecture and an assortment of trendy inner-city neighbourhoods, while the maze-like streets of the historic town help to retain its quaint Mediterranean charm. We embark on a tour of Valencia to experience the bold architecture (both contemporary and Art Nouveau) of locations like the City of Arts and Sciences complex, Colón Market, Turia Gardens, and the Cathedral.

Tonight we delight in Valencia’s most famous dish - Paella. This hearty rice blend is one of the most well-known dishes in Spanish cuisine.

DAY 11 Valencia to Madrid

Today, we journey through the historic La Mancha region, made famous by the legend of Don Quixote - an ageing knight who, inspired by his literary heroes, sets off with his squire in search of chivalrous adventure.

A highlight today is The Castillo de Belmonte - a magnificent medieval castle on the hill of San Cristobal, just outside the village of Belmonte in the southwest of the province of Cuenca. We wander through the halls of this ancient castle and discover grandly furnished rooms and dungeons, elaborately decorated ceilings and door decorations and learn more about its intriguing history. We continue our journey back to Madrid in the heart of Spain.

Arrive into the cosmopolitan city of Madrid later in the afternoon. This evening we enjoy a traditional dinner.

DAY 12 Madrid to Toledo to Granada

Today we journey through central Spain – back in time to the Bronze Age to visit the world heritage protected town of Toledo. Perched atop a rocky gorge amidst the vast plains of Castilla-La Mancha, Toledo is known as the city of three cultures due to Christian, Islamic and Jewish influences; its iconic skyline above the Río Tajo immortalised in the artwork of painter El Greco. Once renowned as a centre of religious tolerance and learning, where the mazelike streets and red brick buildings of the ancient walled town are home to primeval Horseshoe-arched mosques, Sephardic synagogues and one of Spain’s finest Gothic cathedrals.

This afternoon we arrive into Granada often called "Damascus of the West” for a tour of the city. Basking in the glory of its famed hilltop Alhambra, Granada is truly unique. First an Iberian settlement, it came under the influence of the Spanish Moors who travelled there from North Africa in the 8th century. Historically, it became the last stronghold of the creators of the Islamic Andalusian civilization and we see how the city retains a legacy of serene Islamic architecture and Arab-flavoured street life. We find the sprawling medieval Moorish quarter adorned with horseshoe arches, spice scented street stalls and inviting teahouses and the neighbourhood of Albaicin featuring original narrow winding streets and many fine examples of Moorish and Morisco architecture.

DAY 13 Granada to Ronda to Seville

Enjoy free time to explore the renowned city of Granada this morning. In addition to a rich Moorish and Medieval history, Granada is a fascinating city that is packed with street art, culture and the best restaurants. Alternatively, you can choose to join the optional tour to the Alhambra Palace. A spectacular complex full of intrigue and fascinating history, The Alhambra was once the largest political and aristocratic centre of the Moslem West. The Palace grounds comprise many archaeological treasures including the Nasrid buildings that served as living quarters for the monarchs and their servants, the Alcazaba citadel, the La Vela tower and the courtyard of the Lions with its enchanting fountains.

This afternoon, we continue our journey to Ronda, a dramatic mountaintop city set above the breathtaking El Tajo gorge and one of the oldest and most spectacular towns in Spain. Once a stronghold for the fabled Andalusian bandits, Ronda is home to a legendary 18th-century bullring, a stunning ancient town dating back to Moorish rule, a remarkable eighteenth-century arched bridge spanning the El Tajo gorge and tall whitewashed houses that line its precipitous cliff face. We pause to take in the magnificent views from the ‘Puente Nuevo’ (New Bridge) and have free time in Ronda where we can enjoy lunch and the chance to see some of the extraordinary attractions of this spectacular location up close.

Later this afternoon, we arrive into the enchanting city of Seville. From the whitewashed houses and bougainvillea alleyways of Santa Cruz to the intimate flamenco clubs of charismatic Triana, Seville is Spain at its most iconic; where orange trees line the streets, sun dapples the plazas and bustling tapas bars abound.

Tonight we all indulge in a traditional tapas dinner and then embark on a thrilling walking tour led by a local guide. Soak up the culture, sights and sounds of the city as we learn more about its history, culture and architecture. See the historic centre complete with gothic churches, Mudéjar palaces and medieval streets. Seville is also where some famous scenes for TV series and films were shot including Game of Thrones, Star Wars and Lawrence of Arabia.

Surrounded by an impressive fort-like outer wall, this breathtaking complex comprises a series of opulent royal palaces and an expanse of spellbinding gardens. A filming location for the Game of Thrones TV series, the King of Spain still resides in the palace when visiting the city.

Maybe choose to discover all of the glorious mysteries of The Gothic Seville Cathedral; the third largest church in the world with its famed Giralda bell tower overlooking the city’s historic centre, a seductive mix of resplendent Mudéjar palaces and winding medieval laneways. Today we cross the border into the extraordinary country of Portugal, defined by golden beaches, granite peaks, pastel cityscapes and cobblestone townships. Medieval castles and rolling vineyards adorn its verdant interior while local olives, salted cod and vinho verde are served in clifftop villages and inner city laneways the country over. From its striking mountain ranges to the postcard perfect coastline of The Algarve, Portugal has a fascinating history enriched by Celts, Romans, Visigoths, Moors and Christians.

The Algarve is Portugal’s breathtaking southernmost province, renowned for its soaring golden cliffs, whitewashed villages and spectacular sea caves. Iconic destinations are dotted amidst pristine stretches of the warm Atlantic coastline, where enchanting clifftop fishing villages overlook beautiful sandy coves and a lush hinterland of castle towns, tradition-steeped villages and rural farmhouses stretch inland amidst the almond trees and citrus orchards. We tour through this stunning coastal region and pause to spend some free time at one of Algarve’s beautiful beaches as we admire the captivating views, golden sand, and azure blue waters.

After a magical meander through the Algarve we arrive in to Lisbon. We embark on a tour of this invigorating city, ambling along beside the awesome Tagus river - the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula - and through some of Lisbon's most famous streets. Learn of the ancient history, the culture and Portuguese lifestyle. Sights like the emblematic Sao Jorge Castle and the colours of the historic town are a highlight of our driving tour. We discover some of the seven miradouros (viewpoints) dotted around this extraordinary city - all offering awe-inspiring views of Lisbon and its resplendent surrounds.

DAY 16 Explore Lisbon

Choose how you’d like to experience this remarkable city with a selection of activities on offer. Lisbon has been crafted over centuries; find deep-rooted traditions, pastel coloured buildings, ancient archaeological treasures and white-domed cathedrals. A city of enchanting contrasts; where Gothic fortitude mixes with architectural glamour and modern metropolitan flair, as terra-cotta-roofed homes, striking street art, gleaming basilicas, local tascas and antique streetcars tumble down the steep, cobbled alleyways towards the glistening Rio Tejo.

Discover Lisbon's iconic landmarks including the 16th-century Jerónimos monastery, the Monument to the Discoveries, the Belém Tower, Carcavelos Beach, the National Palace, Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, Museu do Oriente, Ajuda Av. Da Liberdade - Lisbon's main boulevard, Terreiro do Parco - one of the largest squares in Europe, Sao Jorge Castle or explore the Bohemian hilltop district of Bairro Alto laid out in 1513, sleepy by day and vibrant by night when it comes alive with a street party atmosphere. Be sure to taste a delicious pasteis de nata (Portuguese custard tart) during your exciting day of discovery.

Perhaps join an optional excursion to Sintra, a charming world heritage protected village and capital of Romanticism in Portugal. Known for its strikingly colourful monuments and once the summer retreat for Portugal’s royal families. Alternatively, maybe join the optional excursion to Fátima Sanctuary and its renowned shrine - Portugal’s most legendary pilgrimage site which celebrates the memory of its founding event, the apparitions of Our Lady to the three little Shepherds.

This evening, find a spot to enjoy one of Portugal's cultural highlights; Fado music - some of the oldest urban folk music in the world.

DAY 17 Lisbon to Obidos to Porto

Today we farewell Lisbon as we continue our exhilarating journey through Portugal to enjoy free time in Obidos. Perhaps start at the main gate into this historic town, Porta de Vila, which contains a beautifully tiled chapel depicting the passion of Christ. Completely enclosed within ancient crenelated walls, it is fascinating to note that Obidos was once a seaport, although today it is located 10km inland due to the silting of its harbour. Explore the charming medieval village known as the “Wedding City” due to a custom whereby ancient kings would gift the village to their queens as a wedding present. Discover the sour cherry liqueur shops which line the main street, see the castles that top the hills and the splashes of vivid yellow and blue adorning the iconic cobblestoned whitewashed streetscapes.

After exploring the extraordinary attractions of Obidos, we resume our travels towards charming Porto where we enjoy an exhilarating driving and guided walking tour of this splendid and fashionable destination. Porto feels like a quaint medieval town amplified to create a fascinating modern metropolis. A labyrinth of narrow cobbled stone streets, pastel buildings and medieval cathedrals rise above the Rio Douro to reveal a magical storybook skyline. Admire the enchanting sights of Porto’s world heritage protected historic town centre, Ponte de' Luis – a stunning bridge crossing the River Douro, the Clerigos Tower and many other famous landmarks of this city that seems to have one foot in the past and one in the present and does so with elegant bravado.

Interspersed with edgy street art, the sound of clinking port glasses fills the streets of this unique city. One of Portugal’s famous exports - Port wine is named after Porto. We relish the opportunity to taste it this afternoon at a Port wine tasting.

DAY 18 Porto to Guarda to Salamanca (Spain)

This morning we meander through the countryside to Guarda where you have free time to discover the remarkable attributes of Portugal’s highest city. Perched on a hilltop in the Serra da Estrela mountains, Guarda was built to guard young Portugal against both the Moors and the Spaniards. Founded in the 12th Century by King Sancho I, many of the fortified towers and defensive walls he built survive to this day. Its small granite historic town retains an authentic mountain ambiance and you will be awe-struck by the majestic Cathedral of Guarda which stands watch over the surrounding countryside. Other sensational highlights include the Guarda Museum, Jewish Quarters and the Corgas da Matança Dolmen - a portal into the lives of the people who lived across the Iberian Peninsula during the Neolithic Period.

We then wave goodbye to Portugal and traverse back across the border to be intoxicated by Spain once again. Arriving into Salamanca, we enjoy free time this afternoon to discover one of the most graceful cities in the country. Admire the riverside sandstone architecture and the vibrancy of its students attending the famous Universidad de Salamanca founded in the 1100’s. There is definitely something magical here, where sandstone streetscapes glow golden in the afternoon light, magnificent cathedrals and monasteries tower above the red tiled rooftops and the glorious Plaza Mayor affords an atmosphere of old-world grandeur.

To complete this memorable day, we enjoy our farewell dinner, offering three courses of delectable cuisine from around the province of Salamanca.

DAY 19 Salamanca to Avila to Madrid

Today we continue our journey to the birthplace of St. Teresa. The fairytale city of Avila sits hiding behind its imposing 11th century medieval walls amidst the rolling and windswept countryside of Castilla y Leon. The historic city and its celebrated Cathedral of the Saviour are completely encircled within superbly preserved stone walls. Marvel at the world heritage protected Romanesque and Gothic churches, as well as the 88 semicircular watchtowers and 9 monumental gates which are a sight to behold. Delight in free time to explore the main sights in the historic centre, such as San Vicente de Ávila, a church that is one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture in the whole of Spain. Ávila is the essence of Castilla and the epitome of old Spain.

We arrive back into vibrant fashionable Madrid for our final evening.
