DAY 2 Negombo to Raswehera Temple to Sigiriya to Dambulla

This morning, we wake in the seaside town of Negombo, a coastal gem where the rhythms of the ocean and local life intertwine seamlessly. Golden beaches are fringed with swaying palm trees, while colourful fishing boats dot the horizon, reflecting the town’s deep connection to the sea. As the sun casts its warm glow over the charming Dutch Colonial architecture and bustling local markets, the scene is set for our first full day in tropical Sri Lanka.

Early risers will have the opportunity to experience the vibrant energy of Negombo's Lellama Fish Market, where the pulse of the local fishing community is on full display. Here, as the first light of dawn touches the horizon, we witness the arrival of boats laden with the ocean's bounty, the lively barter between fishermen, wholesalers and restaurateurs, and the meticulous packing of fresh catch destined for markets far and wide. This bustling market, nestled across the lagoon bridge near the Old Dutch Gate, offers an authentic glimpse into the traditions that sustain this coastal town.

Back at the hotel, we all indulge in a hearty breakfast, before embarking on an exciting journey towards Dambulla, our home for the next two days. Along the way, we experience a fascinating visit to the enigmatic Raswehera Temple, a site rich in legend and artistic mastery. The temple is renowned for its towering Buddha statue carved directly into the natural stone – born from a captivating tale of a master sculptor and his pupil, each vying to craft the most exquisite image. As we stand before this stone marvel, we delve into the historical narratives and local lore that surround it, a reflection of the timeless quest for perfection.

This afternoon, we continue our magical journey through the inspiring Sri Lankan landscape, arriving in Sigiriya – a tranquil country village where the charm of traditional rural life unfolds in the shadow of the soaring ancient Sigiriya Rock fortress. Rising majestically from the surrounding jungle, this 5th century world heritage protected site is a testament to the vision of King Kashyapa. This citadel, known as 'Lion Rock,' was the innermost stronghold of the surrounding fortified town, with its moats, ramparts and expansive gardens. This afternoon, we ascend the fortress’ spiral stairways, where the famed frescoes of the 'Heavenly Maidens' greet us, their beauty immortalised in vivid earth pigments. The panoramic views from the summit offer a resplendent reward for our climb, a moment where history and natural beauty converge – welcoming us to this breathtaking corner of the Sri Lankan countryside.

From here we enjoy a scenic drive to nearby Dambulla to settle into our resort accommodation for the evening.

DAY 3 Dambulla to Polonnaruwa to Giritale to Minneriya Safari to Dambulla

Today we set off on a riveting journey to the historic city of Polonnaruwa – a treasure trove of ancient archaeological marvels. This intriguing city enchants with its sprawling ruins, where centuries-old temples, majestic statues and crumbling palaces silently narrate the grandeur of a bygone Sri Lankan kingdom. As you step into this world heritage protected site, the air seems to carry the stories of a lost age. The vast expanse of Parakrama Samudra glimmers under the sun – a man-made lake from the 12th century that stands testament to the engineering brilliance of the past. Walking among the meticulously planned archaeological remains, we ponder the ancient civilisation that once flourished here.

We continue our journey to the small village of Giritale, where we step into the warmth of local hospitality for lunch. Giritale is a tranquil place, its ancient reservoirs built by Sri Lankan kings reflecting the enchanting scenery of the rolling green hills surrounding the village. On route, we pause at a roadside shop, gathering fresh produce to join our hosts in preparing an authentic, home-cooked meal. This hands-on experience, shared with the villagers, offers an authentic taste of rural life and the opportunity to savour a meal we’ve prepared together.

This afternoon, we bid a fond farewell to our newfound friends in Giritale and continue our adventure to Minneriya National Park for a jeep safari. This is a renowned wildlife haven where hundreds of elephants regularly gather around the ancient Minneriya Tank in a truly unforgettable display of nature's splendour. Let the excitement build as we all embark on the thrilling safari tour, where every turn offers the promise of an unforgettable encounter with nature. As the jeep rolls through the vast savannahs and dense forests, we may catch sight of the majestic elephants gathering—a breathtaking spectacle. Amongst the park’s many inhabitants we may also spot playful langurs or elusive toque macaque monkeys darting through the trees, while an array of vibrant birds flit about painting the sky with colour and mysterious reptiles slither through the landscapes. Amidst this wild tropical paradise, we pause for a refreshing tea or coffee break accompanied by cookies and bananas, savouring the flavours of Ceylon as we immerse ourselves in the natural beauty that surrounds us.

As our magical day exploring Sri Lanka’s natural and cultural treasures draws to a close, we reminisce over a cold beer on the coach ride back to our hotel. Perhaps our tour leader will even teach us a Sinhala song, creating a shared memory that will linger long after the journey ends.

DAY 4 Dambulla to Matale to Kandy

A mesmerising journey from dreamy Dambulla to the sacred city of Kandy awaits today, as we weave through some of Sri Lanka's most enchanting landscapes and cultural treasures.

Our first stop of the day is the awe inspiring Dambulla Cave Temple. Dating back to the 2nd century BC, this ancient, world heritage protected complex is a sanctuary of peace and spirituality. This ancient wonder comprises over 80 caves, some of which are used for meditation by the monks. In the five main caves, we marvel at 153 magnificent Buddha statues, as well as statues of Sri Lankan monarchs and Hindu deities. As we wander through the temple grounds, the Ironwood Forest (Namal Uyana – historic gardens built in the 10th century) and the ancient 500-million-year-old Rose Quartz Mountain flaunt their irresistible beauty and timelessness.

With our spirits uplifted by the sacred atmosphere of Dambulla Temple, we continue our expedition to the Matale Spice Garden – a fragrant plantation where aromatic spices like cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom thrive. The air is rich with the scent of exotic aromatics from nutmeg to mace, offering a sensory journey into the island’s rich culinary heritage. Here, we immerse ourselves in the world of Sri Lankan spices, learning about their cultivation and uses, before savouring a rejuvenating head and shoulder massage and indulging in a delicious lunch amidst the lush greenery of the garden.

Our final destination for the day is the intoxicating city of Kandy – Sri Lanka’s last royal capital. As the evening deepens, we join the faithful in the 'Thewawa' ceremony, witnessing the sacred moment when the casket containing the tooth relic is revealed to devotees—a profoundly moving experience that connects us to the spiritual heritage of this land. DAY 5 Explore Kandy

DAY 7 Nuwara Eliya to Ella to Buduruwagala Rock Temple to Yala Safari

This morning, we are whisked away to the enchanting town of Ella, nestled in Sri Lanka’s breathtaking hill country. As we ascend to Ella, located over 1,000 metres above sea level, the air will cool and the world around us will transform. Surrounded by hills draped in misty cloud forests and emerald tea plantations, Ella is a hidden gem amidst the heavens, graced with abundant wildlife and blossoming flora.

Our first stop today is at the dramatic Ella Gap where you may feel like you’ve stepped straight into a dream. As this breathtaking mountain pass opens up before you, be mesmerised by stunning panoramic views over lush green valleys, mist-covered peaks, and distant plains stretching endlessly into the horizon. This is a view so expansive it feels like you can see all the way to the edge of the world. We also pause at Nine Arch Bridge, a spectacular rail bridge with a stone and brick construct arching gracefully over a staggering verdant ravine. An awe-inspiring feat of engineering from the British colonial era, let the sight of the "nine skies" through the arches leave you speechless.

Our journey then takes us to the ancient temple of Buduruwagala, where time itself seems to stand still. DAY 8 Yala National Park to Galle to Ahangama

This afternoon, step back in time to discover Galle and the city’s famed 16th Century Galle Fort.
